Kate and Brian met in 1998 as part of the UC Berkeley Cognitive Science Students Association, which they both helped to found. They became lovers the following year.

In 2000 they journeyed to Sweden together to teach a programming course at the University of Umeå. From 2000 until 2002 they worked side-by-side writing educational software. In 2003 they road-tripped across the country together and became members of the Ganas community in New York. A year later they moved to Los Angeles to begin graduate programs -- Kate in medicine, Brian in psychology.

In 2005 they vacationed in Paris together, and later that year traveled to Nicaragua, where they studied Spanish.

They are currently living happily together in a lovely apartment in Mount Washington. As pets they keep a dragon, a woolly mammoth, an Epstein-Barr virus, and lots of plants (Curly, Moe, Pink Floyd, Falling Blossom, Frodo, Mutt and Jeff, Esmerelda, and a few more).
